Brittany began her skating journey at 8 years of age in Southern California. Her surfer father didn't know what to think when she told him she loved the smell of the ice, and would rather be in an ice rink than enjoying the sunny beaches of Southern California. Brittany's mom danced ballet for 22 years, so when Brittany expressed her desire to figure skate, there was no question. Her first experience on the ice was monumental. She was bumped up 3 different levels in skating school, and then her mom was approached by a professional coach, and hence, her journey began!
Brittany had already been taking ballet since she was 3, so by the time she started skating, jumping and twirling was already in her blood. She skated freestyle for over 10 years at the Iceoplex skating rink in Simi Valley. During that time, she daily daily trained with Olympic silver medalist, Tiffany Chin, former Olympic pairs skater, Doug Varvais and his wife Lauri Varvais. During the summer, she periodically trained with famed Olympic Bronze Medalist, Peter Oppegard at Lake Arrowhead. She was a consistent and steady competitor. With a love of movement, the 15 years she studied ballet added to her sense of grace, balance and creativity on the ice.
"Skating is one of the most satisfying things I've ever done. It's the perfect combination of athleticism, creative energy and discipline. There is nothing like it. While I deeply love and enjoy dance, figure skating allows even more freedom in movement, particularly because of the speed," said Brittany.
As with so many young figure skaters who compete, they have high hopes for making the Olympic team. As a young girl, Brittany did not have visions of "sugar plum fairies" dancing in her head, but rather visions of "gold medals!" While she did not go to the Olympics, her passion and fire for the sport has continued to light her way into the coaching arena. The combination of 10 years as a competitive figure skater and 15 years of ballet has given her strong technical and choreographic skills. In fact, choreography and off-ice training is her specialty. In addition to years of figure skating and ballet training, Brittany is also a certified CorePower Yoga instructor.
"I not only have a passion for skating, I am committed to working with skaters of all ages to help them achieve their greatest skating potential. To that end, I am wholly dedicated," said Brittany.
...and Brittany loves the smell of the ice.
Brittany resides in beautiful Santa Barbara, California, and she is currently one of the staff professionals at Ice In Paradise in Goleta. Brittany teaches at the skating school and is available for private coaching as well.
